Personality
Aran has done very well adjusting to his new home and hunting conditions. My wife describes him as being like a very nice Čech gentleman. He is very easy to have around and is very gentle with kids. He is a good friends with his new mail order brides (Kaca and Alma) and when they are in heat he does his job, and when they are not he does not pester them as some breeding males do. He is easy to have around other male dogs and does not start fights.

Coat and Conformation
Aran has a thick coat, curly along the back. His coat is somewhat on the long side and too curly to be ideal, but it keeps him very warm in the water. He is compact and stocky (even short relative to his leggy housemates), and thick and strong through the chest. This means that he is very agile on his feet and works well in thick cover, but he is not a stylish or graceful runner. He is not what I would call a pretty dog. But we are not breeding show dogs, and he is strong and his conformation was judged 'very good' in the Čech Republic

Working characteristics
Aran is a very hardworking and eager hunter. He has excellent work rate and does not like to give up looking for a crippled bird. He is very cooperative and responsive in the field, with a perfect mix of boldness and biddability that is common in a good fousek. He did very well last waterfowl season right out of quarantine and over the spring and this summer on peacocks and turkeys. He quickly developed a penchant for killing the possums that come to our fruit trees. I have not taken him deer hunting, because most of the places that I hunt deer require a kiwi aversion certificate, which he does not have yet. The truth is that I already have two great deer dogs (Kaca and Alma) so I haven't put the time in to train him on deer.

As one would expect from his Prize 1 in the rigorous Full Utility Test, he is very good at all the tasks required of a versatile dog: pointing, retrieving, searching, tracking. He is very happy in the water, and summer or winter, whenever we let him out of our dog compound, he goes straight down to the pond to look for ducks, have a swim and search around in the swamp.

Videos of Aran working
These are from the Cech republic, by Pavel D (user Pavfka1). Pavel owned and hunted with Aran for about a year, while Aran was getting ready to come to New Zealand. He and his wife Veronika became very attached to Aran. The videos show a number of working events, including working and searching in the field and pointing a hare, following at heel and then staying at down while Pavel leaves and fires shots, and the tracking of a blood trail, and indicating that he has found it by holding a special leather bag on his collar and coming back to Pavel. You will hear commands and encouragement in Cech, such as Jodne, taky jodne Aran (pronounced Hodnyay, tocky hodnyay Adan, meaning 'good, very good Aran') and Sto-pa (meaning 'blood' or 'track blood'). There are also other videos of Cesky Fousek from Pavel.

Pictures of Aran
We don't have as many pictures of Aran. We have had him less than a year, and I never seem to have my camera when we are hunting together.
