Eric is coming on in leaps and bounds.Hes going through a growth spurt at the moment- physically as well as getting smarter and everything is starting to come together for him insofar as getting his bearings of his environment so it means of course i have to get a bit smarter too. A hare jumped in front of us this morning which he didnt see but he was quickly onto his scent and tracked him quite a distance so that was really great. Hes learning so fast.I take him into at least two different places around home every day- creeksides, swampy ground.rainforest and beach pasture. I like to come out a different way than i go in but when i turn to come back out the same way he always knows and takes the lead and brings us out exactly right no matter the terrain. I usually do about 30 minutes and carry him out on my shoulders if it is too steep depending where we are .Hes pointing naturally and i get him doing 2 play retrieves a day with his toy duck and hes just starting to voluntary open his mouth and let the duck fall into my hand-so i will have to get a duck or pukeko wing soon and get him use to the feathers. He seems to be happy in water but i am taking him very gently there as there is so much water every where down here; i dont want him to be wary of it. The thing i know i have to most be wary of is not to go to fast for him. He picks everything up so fast i have to continually slow my pace down.

Eric is air scenting now . Today we walked out of the swamp just about on top of a pukeko which flew straight upwind into about a 20 knot souwest. Eric didnt see him as he was concentating on getting through the rushes but when we emerged the nose came up and he was really sucking it in and pointing up strongly in the direction and angle the bungy flew. a real thrill to see and after a bit of field scenting he likes nothing better than rolling around in the grasses and rushes- absolute bliss to him. Totaly submerged himself twice in ponds in the swamp today accidently and loved it all which was a great relief to me. All the local farm lads are chuffed with him and the farmers wives are in love with him -hes a bit of a wag as George King reckons. Hoping to get him on to the hinds out the back of the farm on the edges of the DOC block but i wont be going in there as they have just finished bombing everything up round here with the 1080. I keep in touch with the contractors so i know what theyre up to. Its hard to keep ahead of them but its just a fact of life here until we can get a better alternative or more a different way of thinking.
