Personality
Alma is a delightful dog, both in the field and at home, with a real joy of life that comes through in some of the pictures. She is very tractable and intelligent. In fact, she is a little too intelligent at times, because she can open our laundry door with her nose, and let the other dogs into the laundry. In that way, she takes after her paternal grandmother, our first fousek in Oregon, who was a very smart dog. She is a very gentle and friendly dog with kids. She is very easy to have around the house and not prone to wandering.
Coat and Conformation
Alma has the ideal build for a female fousek. She is strong and lithe and is beautiful to see running or working. See pics of her running on the beach below. Her coat is flat and wiry and was described by Bodo Winterhelt as 'an ideal wirehair coat. Personally, I would like to see it a little thicker, but she has never had any problem being cold during long, cold days duck hunting.
Working characteristics
Alma is a very tractable, biddable and hard working hunter. She points and backs other dogs beautifully and works hard and efficiently searching for birds. Because of her graceful build, she is a stylish runner. While deer hunting, she is very easy to control and very good at tracking wounded deer. She retrieves very well on land and water. I would like to see her bolder and more confident in the water to be a really good waterfowl dog. But she still retrieves well from water. She excels at tracking. Whenever I want a dog to demonstrate tracking of a dragged pheasant, hare or wounded deer, I choose Alma. Her combination of calm nature (giving good concentration on the track) and excellent nose lead to very good tracking performance.
